The Department
of Curriculum and Instruction has responsibility for programs in
Elementary Education and Middle Grades Education, and for the professional
education component of programs for individuals preparing to become teachers
in Secondary Schools.
At the
graduate level, in cooperation with the Graduate School, the department
offers the Master of Arts degree in Education with emphases in the following:
elementary /middle grade education, gifted/talented education, reading/writing,
library science, and secondary teaching fields. Fifth and
sixth year nondegree continuing certification programs (Rank II and Rank
I) are offered in elementary/middle grade education, library science,
and secondary teaching fields. Complete details regarding these programs
are included in the undergraduate and graduate university catalogues.
Alternative
certification programs are available for students who hold degrees and
wish to pursue teacher certification. Both graduate (M.A.T.) and undergraduate
routes are available for students seeking elementary, middle-grade or
secondary certification. Regardless of the route selected, students
must meet Kentucky standards for teacher certification. Individualized
programs are developed after transcripts have been carefully assessed.
Joint Doctoral Program
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction provides course work
in the program area of Instruction and Supervision in support of the Joint
Doctoral Program cooperatively offered through the Graduate School with
the University of Kentucky.
