[Curriculum and Instruction News]

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction has responsibility for programs  in Elementary Education and Middle Grades Education, and for the professional education component of programs for individuals preparing to become teachers in Secondary Schools.

At the graduate level, in cooperation with the Graduate School, the department offers the Master of Arts degree in Education with emphases in the following: elementary /middle grade education, gifted/talented education,  reading/writing, library science, and secondary  teaching fields.  Fifth and sixth year nondegree continuing certification programs (Rank II and Rank I) are offered in elementary/middle grade education, library science, and secondary teaching fields. Complete details regarding these programs are included in the undergraduate and graduate university catalogues.

Alternative certification programs are available for students who hold degrees and wish to pursue teacher certification. Both graduate (M.A.T.) and undergraduate routes are available for students seeking elementary, middle-grade or secondary certification.  Regardless of the route selected, students must meet Kentucky standards for teacher certification. Individualized programs are developed after transcripts have been carefully assessed.

Joint Doctoral Program
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction provides course  work in the program area of Instruction and Supervision in support of the Joint Doctoral Program cooperatively offered through the Graduate School with the University of Kentucky.
