Designing Units to Improve Student Performance

Any Grade Level

 

In this workshop, teachers will learn how to design a unit.  A unit is any “chunk” of content that teachers organize as it relates to Kentucky’s Curricular Documents.  When teachers frame a unit, it helps students see and understand the “big picture”.  Well designed curriculum and instruction recognizes the diversity of students and how children learn, construct knowledge and acquire skills and concepts of the disciplines.

CHAMPs:  A Proactive and Positive Approach to Classroom Management

Grade Level:  All

 

CHAMPs is a modular series of materials designed to help educators develop or refine an effective classroom management plan that is proactive and positive.  CHAMPs is organized into eight modules, each of which focuses on one important aspect of effective classroom management.  The modules are:

 

            Module 1:        Vision

            Module 2:        Organization

            Module 3:        Expectations

            Module 4:        The First Month

            Module 5:        Motivation

            Module 6:        Monitor and Revise

            Module 7:        Correction Procedures

            Module 8:        Classwide Motivation Systems

 

The acronym “CHAMPs” reflects the types of expectations that need to be clarified for students about every activity and transition that occurs in the classroom.  Those expectations include:

           

            C     Conversation

            H     Help

            A     Activity

            M     Movement

            P      Participation

 

This session will cover modules 2, 3 & 4 of the 8 module programs.  This training presents materials developed by Dr. Randall Sprick, Mickey Garrison, and Lisa Howard.

Structured Teaching

K-12 Level

 

To effectively teach students with autism, a teacher must provide structure, i.e., set up the classroom so that students understand where to be and what to do.  The following four components of structured teaching are Physical Arrangement of the Classroom, Daily Schedules, Visual Organization of Materials and Individual Work System.  This session will address all four components and provide opportunities for “Hands On” development of activities.  Registered participants may be required to bring a list of items used for the Make and Take session.

 

Audience:       Teachers Instructional Assistants, Related Service Providers, and Parents.

Primary (P-2) Level

 

In this workshop, teachers at the primary level will learn how to: Create a math class for their students by setting up a math menu with starters, mental math, and independent task time; involve all students with number sense, place value and logical thinking tasks; combine basic computation with problem solving and see how “hands-on” activities provide constant assessment in the classroom; focus on the language of mathematics and on active involvement by every student; provide center tasks to differentiate, and meet the needs of all by challenging each child to his/her potential.  Marcy Cook’s approach to teaching math is endorsed by Rafe Esquith in his book, TEACH like Your Hair’s on Fire.

 

Audience:       Teachers and instructional leaders of P-2 students.

 

Presenter:       Marcy Cook, a master educator, author, and math specialist who has presented workshops and seminars for teachers throughout the United States of America as well as in over two dozen foreign countries.

 

When:             Wednesday, June 18, 2008

 

Where:           Holiday Inn at the 104 Athens-Boonsboro Exit of I-75 near Lexington

 

Time:              8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Building Unique Schedules

(Principals’ Academy)

 

This Academy is designed as a follow-up to the workshop by the same title that was held on the EKU campus in February.  However, it is open to all leaders, whether they were able to attend the first workshop or not.  The two days will be broken down into 5 focus groups which will allow participants to attend the sessions that are most beneficial to their own responsibilities.  Those focus groups will be: (1. Building the Master Schedule for K-8; (2. Building the Master Schedule for 6-12; (3. Organizing and Sustaining Small Learning Communities for K-8; (4. Organizing and Sustaining Small Learning Communities for Grades 6-12; and (5. Teaching in Variable Time Periods for All Grades.

 

Audience:       Principals and Instructional leaders in P-12 settings.
